Unsolved Case #45
Reference Number 02-05
Joshua Kale Wheeler
Murdered October 8, 2000
My son Joshua Kale Wheeler was murdered on October 8, 2000. His picture is attached. He was 21 years old, and has a daughter who ia 3, Kaliana Wheeler.
The murder happened around 1:30 am on October 8, 2000 near the laagoon in Swope Park, Kansas City, Missouri. The police won't give me many details because it is still under investigation.
My son was shot in the head, near his car, which was a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu, Teal Green. He was shot at close range in the temple. The police believe it was by someone who knew him. They suspect his girlfriend but have no proof, at least any they will tell me.
He was wearing a white button-up shirt with black curduroy pants and a leather jacket. He had a gold watch that he just bought that was worth around $140. The watch is missing. He was last seen at a gas station and was caught on video with a black boy around 11:30 in the evening of October 7, 2000. No one seems to know who this boy is and they even ran the video on the news.
There are no known witnesses. My son had a cell phone that I told him was glued to his ear. He was always on the phone. But when the police retreived the phone the records show that nobody called him after 8:30 that evening. My son was living with my brother at that time, and my brother said my son came by his house around 10:00 or 10:30 and he was talking on his cell phone. He was calling friends to meet him at a bar in Lee's Summit, Missouri. No one at the bar recalls him being there. So we don't know if he actually made it there or not.
My son did not frequent Swope Park and I told him to avoid this area at night because people have been hurt there. There are drug dealers and bad people who lurk there in the evening. I believe he was killed somewhere else and left at the park. The police won't give me these details. Actually, I believe the police have abandonned this case as a drug deal. The woman who is a suspect, my son's ex-girlfriend at the time, had a warrant for her arrest for not showing up for a court date, but the police insisted they had to motive to search her residence. She had also written many letters to my son, and some had included lie threatening words. They know she had threatened him on many occasions and even have police reports showing that she attacked him physically while he was holding his daughter. No one has done a thing about any of this. I am outraged, and probably will be for the rest of my life. They didn't even search the lagoon for a murder weapon!
If you need anyhting else, let me know. And I appreciate being able to vent my feelings.
